Trisha Brockhurst: 20 Years of Championing Safety Leadership

For two decades, Trisha Brockhurst has been a driving force behind improved safety cultures across diverse industries, from the rigorous demands of Oil & Gas and Mining to the dynamic environments of Civil Construction and Manufacturing. Her success isn't just measured in regulatory compliance and contractual adherence, but in the profound impact she's had on the individuals and teams she's worked with, fostering a proactive and engaged approach to safety.

Trisha's experience is vast. She's directed the daily HSE obligations of new maintenance contracts, seamlessly integrating with project teams ranging from 30 to 300 members. This involved the complex coordination of diverse sub-contractors, each with unique job scopes and safety requirements. But beyond the administrative and logistical challenges, Trisha excelled in fostering a unified safety culture across these multifaceted teams.

What truly sets Trisha apart is her dedication to mentorship. She's not just a safety manager enforcing rules; she's a safety leader who empowers individuals to own and champion safety. She's honed her skills in training and developing field employees on the job site, crafting personalized HSE improvement exercises and targeted training sessions to elevate their performance. Moreover, her influence extends beyond the field, reaching senior and middle managers, providing them with the coaching and mentorship needed to lead with safety in mind.

Trisha firmly believes that "Safety Leadership is the process of positive interactions between leaders and followers. Through these interactions, leaders can exert their influence on followers to achieve organizational safety goals." This philosophy underscores her approach. It's about building trust, fostering open communication, and empowering individuals to take responsibility for their safety and the safety of those around them.

This belief highlights a crucial distinction: Safety Leadership is NOT Safety Management! While safety management focuses on processes, regulations, and reactive measures, safety leadership is about creating a proactive culture where safety is a core value, not just a requirement. It's about inspiring employees to go above and beyond compliance, to actively identify and mitigate hazards, and to contribute to a safer working environment.

Trisha's success stems from her understanding that true safety excellence is achieved when leadership actively engages with employees, fostering a shared commitment to a safe and healthy workplace. By prioritizing mentorship and positive interaction, Trisha Brockhurst is not just managing safety, she's leading a transformation towards a culture of proactive safety ownership, one person, one team, one organization at a time.
